Day 140 – Glendive to Williston

Today has been a bit dull. To be honest I’m not overly upset about that given yesterday’s events but it does mean that this will be a short update. I also lost another hour today so it is already rather late.

Unlike last time, I knew the clocks would change as I crossed the state border but this did not make me move any faster this morning. In fact I left an hour later than anticipated… It wasn’t a particularly long day so it didn’t actually matter that much.

The reason for my current tardiness is that I have spent a rather long time this evening hacking away at my shoes with a penknife… Upon entering North Dakota, the road surface changed to one that evidently gets quite hot. When I stopped pedalling and briefly put my foot down, I noticed my shoe sticking to the road. Now I’m not 100% sure what it was but I think that the road melted the bottom of my shoes. Either way, I now have a very very thick rubbery substance coating the sole of my shoes and my pedals. (as well as a fair bit of debris that is now stuck to every surface). I have hopefully sorted the worst of it, but to did make the last 20 kilometres a bit ‘different’.

Distance: 96.1mph / 154.7km
Riding Time: 6:29:16
Av. Speed: 14.8mph / 23.8kph

  1. Yikes, that’s been seriously warm, I have never had that happen to me even in some pretty high temps in Spain. I was Onto Portland yesterday and they were saying it was very hot. Hopefully if you do bump into anybody this weekend they will be in great spirits, seemingly they make a big event of the 4th July weekend. This might fix your problem, don’t stop to put your feet down!!

  2. That sounds terrible- maybe get some some thinners/white spirit if it all gets too gunked up? Had an amusing day with your cousin Henry last week at his company’s fancy dress croquet day. (just so you know we’re all still taking life seriously here) God speed and have a great July 4th weekend Thomas!
